Mathison Park
A Park Reaches Its Potential
Mathison Park, which was initially developed as a small one acre neighborhood space, lacked access, overlooks and trails. The City wanted to make improvements by significantly expanding the size of the park to over five acres. The park improvements give the neighborhood in and around Highline a easily accessible open space.
KPG’s design carefully sited a new trail system through the length of the park on a steeply sloped area. Design was focused on protecting the park’s mature Madrone trees and included extensive invasive plant removal.
The project provided features that are tailored to the desires of the community, including the ADA shared-use trail with overlook picnicking areas, a soft surface nature trail with interpretive signage, seat walls, children’s play structure, native landscape restoration, and a memorial stone with interpretive plaque.
